Tax Laws in Quebec on Short-Term Renting

The introduction of short-term rentals has led governments to apply proper taxation in this new industry, more specifically in the province of Quebec. 

Unlike other platforms where you have to personally remit the 3.5% Tax on Lodging, Airbnb collects it automatically through its platform and remits it directly to the Quebec government.

In the case that your income from Airbnb exceeds C$ 30,000 in the last four calendar quarters, or in any single calendar quarter, you must register for the GST and QST and remit it to the Quebec government.

The moment your income exceeds C$ 30,000 within the 4 quarter period, you’ll have 29 days from the first day of the second month to register.

There are three ways to register for the GST and QST:

  • Calling Revenu Québec (fastest way).
  • Visiting one of the offices of Revenu Québec.
  • Sending by mail the registration form.
